History for the Detroit Red Wings runs deep, and a big name is returning to his stomping grounds. Steve Yzerman brings Nick Lidstrom home to be the Vice President of Hockey Operations. He announced on Tuesday that he was bringing in Lidstrom for the job. Nick was the immediate predecessor as Captain of the team after Yzerman left the team but was his teammate for many seasons before taking over the C. This is a big move by Yzerman and the young defensive core is going to benefit greatly by bringing in a man like him. Detroit is looking even more prime as they continue during their rebuild.

As A Player

Lidstrom was a top tear defenseman. His 20 years were purely spent with the Red Wings and he earned his place on the cup 4 times. In 2015 he was inducted into the NHL Hall of Fame to add to his impressive award list. Lidstrom won the Norris (top defensemen in NHL) 7 times and earned the Conn Smythe (MVP in Playoffs). His impressive play didn’t end with the NHL, he carried over into international play and won gold in both the Olympics and World Championships with team Sweden. His overwhelming depth of knowledge and capability brings him back to Detroit where he truly made his name famous.

Looking Forward

As if it wasn’t good enough to have an NHL Hall of Famer running the team, you now have two at the top of the Red Wings. From their time as elite players ruling over the rest of the NHL, to now working together in the front office, these guys are something special to Detroit. Moritz Seider, one of the best rookie defensemen in the NHL right now is excited to work with Lidstrom. He’s mostly excited to just pick his brain and learn about him as a person. You can obviously learn how to play by watching his videos but learning the inner workings and what he thinks brings a new perspective to the game.

Also as a player, it’s something else to go from just seeing the number and name in the rafter from previous greats in the franchise, to now that person standing in front of you. He is going to be such a viable resource from the players up to coaches too. Coach Jeff Blashill is excited to have another resource like that in the front office. “From his personal experience, he can really help a guy like Moritz. I think he can help all of us…” Though this obviously won’t flip the script overnight, the Red Wings are looking more poised than ever to make a return to power.

Conclusion

It truly is an exciting time to be a Red Wing fan, partway into a rebuild and the team is looking strong. The front office is filling with great names and minds. Meanwhile, the ice is being filling with some great young talents. The so call “Yzerplan” appears to be working. After what he did with Tampa Bay, it’s looking like Detroit is about to emerge as a powerhouse again. Rome wasn’t built in a day. But the Red Wings are just a couple years away from possibly bringing Lord Stanley back to Hockeytown.
