After a long regular season, the San Francisco 49ers will now face the Dallas Cowboys in the wildcard. Kyle Shanahan and the boys have reached the playoffs after defeating the LA Rams in overtime 27-24. Now they will have the hard test ahead of them.
Despite not being labeled as the favorites, many people see a possible Niners win. Whether if it’s due to the hate that the Cowboys get, there are many possibilities for the 49ers to come out of Dallas with a ticket to the Divisional Round.
Here are the 49ers’ keys to victory against the Cowboys.
Neutralizing Micah Parsons
If there’s anything the 49ers can do to maximize their chances of winning it’s being able to minimize Micah Parsons’ impact. The rookie linebacker has been very impressive in his first season, which saw him named ‘runaway’ defensive rookie player of the year. According to ESPN, Parsons has 13 sacks and 3 forced fumbles this season so far. Fd
If Shanahan and the offensive line manage to neutralize Micah Parsons, they could relieve some major stress on Jimmy Garoppolo. Jimmy G is a quarterback known to stay in the pocket. So unless Garoppolo becomes a more mobile quarterback this Sunday, he will hope that Trent Williams and the rest of the offensive line is able to stop the Cowboys’ rookie.
Stopping Dak Prescott And Company
Another key area San Francisco will need to focus on will be on Dallas’s offense. The Niners will have to face one of the top offenses in the NFL. The Cowboys’ offense rank 1st in total yards (6,919), 1st in points per game (31.2), and 2nd in passing yards per game (282.4).
Something that could make ‘faithful’ fans feel better is that most of these demolishing Dallas wins came against non-playoffs teams. In the regular season, the Cowboys were only able to beat one playoff team, New England Patriots. But what can’t be discredited is Dallas’s offensive power as the stats don’t lie.
Nevertheless, the Niners’ defensive focus should be on stopping Dak Prescott. The Cowboys’ quarterback is said to be having a slump in form after putting up impressive numbers throughout the season. If the 49ers are able to use their defensive stars like Nick Bosa and Fred Warner to slow down Dak, they could prevent the game from being a high-scoring one.
Working Around Deebo
If there’s anyone who could single-handedly take over the offensive responsibility it’s Deebo Samuel. Deebo is having a phenomenal season, where according to ESPN he’s averaged 17.2 yards per reception and a total receiving yards of 1,405.
This is exactly why the Niners’ offense should work around Deebo. Not only because he always comes up with big plays, but because the Cowboys’ defense will have their focus on Samuel. Dallas will want to neutralize their biggest threat. This will ultimately open up a few cracks in the Cowboys’ defense, and this is where Garoppolo and company could take advantage.
This could open the door for a bigger role to the rookie Elijah Mitchell. Mitchell is having an impressive start to his NFL career, where he has 963 rushing yards in the season so far. The Niners could set up the running game through the rookie. Another player that could slip through the Dallas’ cracks is George Kittle. He hasn’t gotten as much spotlight as Deebo in these past few weeks. This could eventually lead the Cowboys to not put as much importance on Kittle. Ultimately, If Kittle takes advantage of possibly being overlooked, he could share the spotlight wirth Deebo in the end.
